MPMA LADIES AUXILIARY

President Mrs. Judy James

MPMA LADIES AUXILIARY HISTORY
The National MPMA Ladies Auxiliary was proposed at the MPMA National Convention in 1970 (held in Washington, DC) by retired Sgt Major “Hashmark” Johnson. Sgt. Major Johnson stated that “we need a Ladies Auxiliary to add strength and prestige to our organization”. At the conclusion of Marine Johnson’s remarks a standing ovation from the floor was received. The motion was passed and accepted.
In 1971 the National Convention was held in New Orleans. Mr. Jack Loving of Boston was asked to start formation of the Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Almita Woods of North Carolina was elected to act as the moderator.
In 1972 the association held their convention in Nassau Bahamas. The Auxi8liary did not function at this time due to the death of Sgt. Major Johnson, who had proposed a Ladies Auxiliary, casted a shadow on the convention activities.
In 1973 the National Convention was held in Cleveland, Ohio. The National Ladies Auxiliary was formed. Mrs. Willie Mae Hill of Philadelphia Chapter was elected the first National President. Twenty-eight ladies were present at the convention. This number included representatives of local chapters from Camp LeJuene, NC, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, and Chicago, IL.
It has been a long time since that day that retired Sgt. Major Johnson proposed that the MPMA needed a Ladies Auxiliary. We have made many strides, our number one goal being to help the men and women of MPMA to preserve the legacy of those brave black marines who were trained at Montford Point, NC after President Roosevelt desegregated the United States Military.
We presently have auxiliaries in Beaufort, SC, Camp LeJeune, NC, Chicago, IL, Maryland, Quantico, VA, St. Louis, MO, and Washington, DC
